The Giants’ first move before the trade deadline involves the only player acquired at last year’s deadline.

According to The New York Daily News, San Francisco has traded left-handed pitcher Anthony Banda to the New York Mets in exchange for infield prospect Will Toffey.

Banda, 27, was mostly a flop since being acquired in a trade with the Rays last season, posting a 6.86 ERA in 10 games with Triple-A Sacramento so far this year. That included a whopping 52 hits in 39 and 1/3 innings.

In exchange the Giants are taking a flier on Toffey, 26, a former fourth-round pick by the Athletics who despite having a lowly .176 average at Double-A Binghamton this year, gets on-base and hits for power at a high enough clip to be posting a .703 OPS.

Toffey is also a Vanderbilt alum, a school that Farhan Zaidi has frequently targeted prospects and players (Mike Yastrzemski, Curt Casali) from during his tenure in San Francisco and Los Angeles.
