The Giants are stashing arms in their farm system. After opening the draft on Sunday by snagging the College World Series MVP in Mississippi State’s Will Bednar with the 14th overall pick, San Francisco grabbed another arm on Monday, drafting Matt Mikulski in the second round.
Mikulski is a hard-throwing left-hander who many project to be a reliever. In his last season with Fordham in the Atlantic 10 Conference, Mikulski was absolutely lights-out. Over his 68.1 innings in 11 games, he finished 9-0 with a 1.45 ERA, 124 strikeouts and a nonsensical 0.820 WHIP.
He stands at a listed 6’4″, 205 pounds and features a three-pitch mix which all worked well for him last season in a mid-90s fastball which kicked up to 98 at times, an above average slider in the mid-80s and an above average changeup.
Mikulski ranks as MLB.com’s 50th-best prospect in the draft. On their 20-80 grading scale, he was given grades of 60 on his fastball, 55 on his slider, 50 on his changeup, 45 for control and 50 overall.
