Addressing the media after Wednesday afternoon’s 6-2 extra innings loss to the New York Mets, Giants starter Anthony DeSclafani didn’t appear too concerned about the right ankle injury that forced him to leave after 1.1 innings.

It’s just irritated and stuff,” DeSclafani told reporters. “I think there’s a lot of positive things about it. I think it’s kind of just double checking with some imaging. I think it’s just going to be day-to-day.”

DeSclafani, 31, said he began feeling discomfort on the outside of his right ankle while facing the last batter of the first inning. Then, he apparently further hurt it running over to cover first on a ground ball to Brandon Belt. He left the game after walking the next batter, Jonathan Villar, on five pitches.

The pain wasn’t due to him rolling his ankle on the bag or otherwise, rather a gradual discomfort, he said. He added there was a pain when he’d push off the rubber to generate momentum towards home plate. He’s been almost totally healthy in 2021, going 11-5 in 24 starts. He landed on the 10-day IL in early August with a shoulder injury, but returned as soon as allowed.

DeSclafani will undergo imaging tomorrow to get a better sense of what’s going on.

“(DeSclafani) is moving around pretty good,” Giants manager Gabe Kapler said. “So feel some optimism around that, but we’ll wait to see what the scan says.”

While he entered Wednesday with a 3.29 ERA, DeSclafani’s last quality start came five outings ago, on July 22 against the Dodgers. His final line on Wednesday was 1.1 innings pitched, one strikeout, one hit batter, one hit allowed and no earned runs.
