OAKLAND — The Giants have placed infielder Evan Longoria and starting pitcher Anthony DeSclafani on the injured list prior to Sunday afternoon’s matchup with the Oakland Athletics.
Longoria had been hit by a pitch in the hand during Wednesday’s game with the Mets. Gabe Kapler said his finger was sore, and he was only available as an emergency defensive replacement on Saturday. He hasn’t played since the HBP.
Longoria’s IL stint is vaccine-related.
Earlier in the year, Longoria hit the 60-day IL with a shoulder injury after colliding with shortstop Brandon Crawford. The 35-year-old has missed 68 of 122 games so far in 2021, but has been productive when healthy. Longoria is hitting .289 with a .903 OPS.
DeSclafani, meanwhile, hits the 10-day IL after Kapler had previously been optimistic he could make his upcoming scheduled start against the Mets. DeSclafani exited his most recent start in the second inning with right ankle soreness. Sunday, he planned to throw a bullpen session but reportedly didn’t throw off a mound.
Since DeSclafani’s injury occurred August 19, he’ll be eligible to return August 29 at the earliest.
In corresponding moves, SF recalled relievers Sammy Long and Jay Jackson from Triple-A Sacramento. They’re both with the team in Oakland, so they could be available immediately. Right-handed pitcher Reyes Moronta will also return from his rehab assignment to Sacramento. Moronta had been shut down with an elbow injury in April.
