As their division-rival Los Angeles Rams were doing something of a victory lap before their Monday night matchup — with newly-acquired defensive end Von Miller posting a FaceTime screenshot of newly-signed receiver Odell Beckham Jr. — San Francisco announced a move echoing the current situations for both teams.
The team announced on Thursday that Jalen Hurd, the team’s early third-round pick from 2019, who missed that season with a stress fracture in his back, the 2020 season with a torn ACL, and has missed all of this season with complications from that ACL tear, has been waived.
This punctuates a truly disappointing tenure in which Hurd had very few opportunities on the field, but looked like he could have been a dynamic receiving option if he could stay healthy. That never happened.
Hurd had two touchdowns in his first preseason game against the Dallas Cowboys in 2019. No one knew at that point that it would be the highlight of his 49ers career, as he failed to ever play a regular season game with the team.
In addition to waiving Hurd off injured reserve, San Francisco announced the signing of offensive lineman Corbin Kaufusi and corner Saivion Smith to the team’s practice squad.
