Kyle Shanahan made it seem like a whole lot of nothing, but the betting markets are indicating otherwise.
The 49ers-Packers line shot up from Green Bay favored by 4.5 points to Green Bay by 6 on Tuesday morning, a day after Shanahan mentioned that Garoppolo sustained an injury to his throwing shoulder in the second quarter last Sunday.
“He should be fine for practice,” Shanahan said on Monday about Garoppolo’s issue. “He did it in the second quarter. I know he had to play through some pain, but he ended up checking out alright. Just a slight shoulder sprain and he should be good for Wednesday’s practice.”
That diagnosis would seem to indicate that Garoppolo should be fine for Saturday’s game vs. the Packers, so why the shift in odds? The disconnect here seems similar to what happened with Garoppolo’s thumb injury, one Shanahan said wasn’t that serious, despite reports indicating otherwise.
Shanahan ended up being right about that — Jimmy missed just one game — so perhaps he’s earned the benefit of the doubt.
This could also be a case of Vegas taking into account that both Nick Bosa (concussion) and Fred Warner (ankle) are considered questionable for Saturday; though Shanahan did seem optimistic about both players.
For now we will wait until Wednesday to see if Garoppolo does indeed practice.
