Tashaun Gipson’s emergence in 2022 was one of the most unlikely stories of the season for the 49ers. He’ll be back for an encore in 2023.
San Francisco has reportedly re-signed the veteran safety to a one-year deal according to multiple reports. Gipson was considering retirement after the season, but will instead re-join an elite 49ers defense and is expected to slot back into his starting free safety role with Jimmie Ward likely to sign elsewhere.
The 49ers picked up Gipson during the preseason for practice squad depth, after Ward was placed on the injured reserve. Gipson played so well alongside strong safety Talanoa Hufanga at the beginning of the season that he never gave up the job, and instead forced SF to play Ward at the nickel corner position.
It shouldn’t come as too much of a shock that Gipson played so well. He was a Pro Bowl safety in 2014 with the Cleveland Browns, the first of five teams he played for since entering the league as an undrafted player in 2012.
According to Dave Lombardi of The Athletic, Gipson is signing for an extremely reasonable $2.9 million for 2023. It’s a nice bump for Gipson, however, who made just over a million last season Here’s the full breakdown:
Gipson started all 20 games for the 49ers in 2022. Hopefully, he can start even more in 2023.
