Brock Purdy has be cleared to play, but will we see him in the 49ers’ preseason opener vs. the Raiders on Sunday.
According to Matt Maiocco, don’t count on it Maiocco believes that Purdy will sit out the entire regular season, and that Trey Lance is in the pole position to get the first crack in Las Vegas.
“I would think they would go with Trey Lance just because he’s been around,” Maiocco said on Tolbert & Copes. “He started last season as the starter. I don’t think they consider it a big deal, but my guess would be as a courtesy to Trey Lance having been here that he would get the first crack at it.
Maiocco believes that Lance looks better than he ever has. Sam Darnold looks good as well, but it’s hard to trust a player who has never put it together in games.
“Trey Lance looks better than he ever has,” Maiocco said. “He’s throwing the ball better. Better mechanics, everything’s tighter. He looks like he’s not thinking and he’s just playing football. And Darnold looks very impressive on the practice field, but I just wonder with Darnold, the knock on him has never been the physical skills. It’s just how quickly he sees the game. So his style and his profile is always going to look really good on the practice field. I just wonder with the knock being on him how he sees the game, how quickly he’s processing and all that, I just wonder if he’s on point when it comes to that.”
