It’s been rare to watch Brock Purdy make any glaring mistakes since taking over as the 49ers starter. So, when he overthrew three players on Sunday (and threw a ball behind Deebo Samuel on a key third down), it raised some eyebrows.
Is this something to worry about? Something that just happens to quarterbacks? Will these misses be the rule or the exception going forward?
Tim Ryan joined Murph & Mac on Monday to discuss the 49ers’ 30-23 win over the Rams, and those Purdy misses.
Kyle Shanahan said after the game that Purdy’s miss of Jauan Jennings was tough, and the most forgivable. He said that the overthrow of Brandon Aiyuk was perhaps the most disappointing.
Ryan agreed, and thinks that Purdy’s offseason surgery might be playing a factor in terms of feel. He’s not that concerned long term.
“Look, Purdy’s not going to miss too many of those sluggos and those burner routes when guys are wide open,” Ryan said. “I think it’s just a matter of that feel coming back in the arm on the deep ball.”
He expanded, saying that his gut feeling is the internal brace takes a little getting used to.
“That’s a feel thing on that deep ball,” Ryan said. “So much of it is dropping it in the bucket when a guy is that wide open. There’s a lot of feel to that and something tells me that that internal brace, that synthetic slingshot, just not quite there in terms of the feel and the finesse throws yet and I would expect that to get better.”
Purdy was excellent throwing the deep ball last season, and you’d expect that to get back on track.
