Who should the Giants’ next manager be? Duane Kuiper has a familiar name he likes.
Kuiper joined Murph and Mac on Wednesday and offered his thoughts on the Giants’ vacancy after the team parted ways with Gabe Kapler.
Kuiper was careful not to say that Vogt is his favorite for the job, but made it clear he’d be a fan if he was hired.
“All the people that they’ve interviewed, I think it’s great,” Kuiper said. “There’ll be more people coming. Vogt, I think, interview is tomorrow. And I like him a lot. I mean, look, it’s not for me to say who my favorite is of all the people that they’ve interviewed so far, and I like them all a lot, and Stephen Vogt definitely falls into that category. He’s a good dude.”
Kuip was asked to expand on his own experience with Vogt, and sung the former All-Star catcher’s praises.
Kuiper sees him as having a multifaceted approach and being able to slot in basically anywhere in an organization.
“My experience was is he was one of those players that could do anything he wanted to do in an organization when he got finished playing,” Kuiper said. “He could be in the front office. He could be a broadcaster. He could be a coach. It could be a manager. That’s how I felt about him. And any one of those jobs that he tackles, he’d be really, really good at.”
He added that there’s one quality Vogt shares with Bruce Bochy.
“Plus, in a lot of ways, he’s like Boch where he’s got a really terrific sense of humor that sometimes gets lost in that job,” Kuiper said. “And sometimes in that job, you need that.”
Kuiper’s suggestion that it will likely take until November to have a manager in place means there’s quite a bit of waiting left to do. But Vogt, who was well-liked in his more than five seasons in Oakland and one with the Giants, could be an enticing option.
He spent the last year as the Seattle Mariners’ bullpen coach and quality control coach.
