At the absolute buzzer of the 2025 MLB trade deadline, the Giants finally made their first move of what was otherwise an incredibly packed day of movement around the sport. San Francisco is trading its closer Camilo Doval to the New York Yankees, the second SF reliever to be shipped off in as many days.

Jeff Passan of ESPN broke the news as the clock struck 3:00 pacific. The return from New York is modest. The Yankees sent Jesus Rodriguez, Parks Harber, Trystan Vrieling and Carlos de La Rosa. Vrieling and Rodriguez are the Yankees 19th and 25th ranked prospects, respectively.

The trade comes on the heels of an up and down year and a half stretch for Doval. The former All-Star closer struggled for much of 2024 before losing the closer job. When Ryan Walker faltered, Doval re-assumed the role and had modest success. He hasn’t been able to replicate his truly dominant 2022-23 form. Doval leaves the Giants with a 3.09 ERA and 50 strikeouts in 46.2 innings.

In another deal that was announced just minutes after the deadline came down, the Giants sent Mike Yastrzemski to the Kansas City Royals. Buster Posey makes a clear statement at the deadline in response to his team’s nosedive over the last six weeks. One that essentially dropped them out of playoff contention.
