49ers fans should know by now that they can’t have nice things. At least not for long. Less than 24 hours after a dramatic one point victory over Arizona put the Niners at 3-0 and alone in first place in the NFC West, the team got the worst possible news regarding star defensive lineman Nick Bosa.For the second time in the perennial Pro Bowler’s career, he suffered a complete tear of his ACL. Bosa is out for the season.
It’s a devastating blow to a team that was riding high at 3-0, and by all accounts, about to get a whole lot more healthy and formidable in the NFC. Brock Purdy, sidelined for weeks two and three with turf toe, looks poised to return Sunday against Jacksonville. Wide receiver Demarcus Robinson has served his three week suspension and will debut Sunday. Jauan Jennings missed the Cardinals game, but he too is expected to return against the Jags. George Kittle and his healing hamstring aren’t far behind that trio.
Those ailments shrivel in comparison to the despair that comes with a Bosa season ending knee injury. His absence will likely severely lower the postseason ceiling of a Niners team that is set to enjoy the NFL’ easiest schedule to go along with its 3-0 start.
It’s about as cliche as cliches get, but “next man up” has become an unfortunate theme throughout the John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan era. The Niners’ brass will have to get right to work piecing together a contingency plan for replacing Bosa. In the immediate aftermath, Murph & Markus say the Niners should sit back and evaluate exactly what the roster is capable of before making any moves.

Eddy Pińeiro was the hero on Sunday. His walk off field goal was a sight for sore eyes for Niner fans who have been trained to expect the worst by Jake Moody’s woes. Pińeiro joined Murph & Markus as the 49ers player of the week on Tuesday morning. He offered an interesting take on how kickers are routinely drilling 55+ yarders now.
