As Kenneth Walker scampered past a pathetic clump of limp 49ers tacklers on his way to converting a 3rd-and-17 that not even the Seahawks expected had a chance, the 49ers and their fans were hit with the harsh weight of reality. Then, one drive later, when a tipped pass bounced off the lap of Christian McCaffrey and directly into the hands of an again unsuspecting Seahawks defender, the sobering lack of any room for error slapped the Faithful across the face.
If the previous six weeks showed the 49ers that the sky is the limit, Saturday night’s loss to Seattle showed a ceiling so low they’d have to duck to avoid the doorframe. It’s a dramatic contrast that raises the question, which version of the 49ers is authentic?
It’s hard to believe that the 49ers offense we saw trudge off the field against Seattle is the same unit that torched the Bears for six touchdowns and 42 points a week earlier. Brock Purdy and his brigade could not be stopped against the Bears, looking like an improved version of the dynamic 2023 offense that went to the Super Bowl. The party did not continue against a much better Seahawks defense. For the first time all year, San Francisco was held out of the end zone. The Niners didn’t pick up a first down in the first quarter. Brock Purdy was constantly under siege, evading a steady stream of Seattle rushers poised to make his life hell all night long. And they did.
And so went the Niners’ lofty goals of capturing the NFC West crown, and with it the NFC’s top seed. Now, they’ll have to do it the hard way. The road back to Santa Clara begins in Philadelphia at Lincoln Financial Field, where a number of 49ers bones are buried from the 2022 NFC title game. The stage isn’t quite as big as it was that afternoon, but Philadelphia will be rocking in a similar manner as the Niners take the field.
Kyle Shanahan wasted no time switching gears to the Wild Card round once the dust settled at Levi’s on Saturday. The ninth year head coach embraced the tough path, citing the adversity his team faced all year as a strength.
"We embrace the shit out of doing it the hard way."

The Seahawks lived it up in the visitor’s locker room at Levi’s, just as the Niners did in Seattle after the season finale in 2019. George Kittle was asked if he was bothered by this, but the star tight end didn’t take the bait.

KITTLE: "Cool."
Do you take offense to it?
KITTLE: "I would do the same shit. Yeah, I mean what? They won the division. They got the 1 seed. They won in a rival stadium. Good for them." pic.twitter.com/JKuKb7H28I
