Five sleeps, Giants fans. This time next week, Tony Vitello and the Giants will have a win-loss record. Before the Giants and Yankees grace 3rd & King and Netflix accounts across the globe, Buster Posey and Zack Minasian are tasked with cutting down the roster as bags are packed in Scottsdale. That work started in waves earlier this week.
The Giants most prized possession apparently needs a bit more slow cooking. Bryce Eldridge, the organization’s most promising prospect in decades, was reassigned to minor league camp on Thursday as Cactus League Spring Training winds down and the final roster is formed. Eldridge put together plenty of highlights in the spring, but overall inconsistency kept the 21-year-old from forcing the Giants to etch him into the lineup on March 25.
Tony Vitello told reporters after the move that Eldridge took it like a pro. He emphasized that the staff would like to see Eldridge fine tune his plate discipline at the minor league level. The power will always be there, but the selection has to develop.
The Giants were well represented at the World Baseball Classic. So too in the championship game, when Venezuela took down the U.S. for the crown. Jose Butto and Luis Arraez were victorious, while Logan Webb and the United States came up short. The contrast in style was apparent at the WBC, with the latin nations’ demonstrative style earning adoration globally, while the stoic manner of the American players drew criticism.
Webb told Slusser that he doesn’t feel that the Americans were perceived properly, noting in an SF Chronicle article that the comparative lack of visual passion didn’t mean team USA cared any less.
Eldridge’s demotion paves the way for Luis Matos and Jerar Encarnacion to be platoon bats for the Giants early in the spring. Matos, out of minor league options, will take his at bats in a do or die setting in orange and black. Encarnacion, often injured in a 2025 season that was almost completely taken from him, will look to provide the Giants with legitimate power off the bench.
Just five days from Opening Day, the roster seems to be just about set. But that doesn’t rule out some last minute moves from a Giants front office that has been known to take a shot in the trade market under Buster Posey. Whether it’s the problematic bullpen, or a starter to bolster the back end of the rotation.
Mike Krukow joined Murph & Markus on Thursday morning, he detailed his expectation that Posey will continue to tinker with the roster.

More from The Sports Leader this week!
"That's not to say that they aren't good players. It's just can any of them become great players?"@JDJohnDickinson isn't fully bought in on the 49ers' young players and compares it to the Warriors lack of foundational pieces.
