Detroit Red Wings center Dylan Larkin will miss the first two games of the season this weekend with an upper-body injury.
Head coach Todd McLellan confirmed the former captain’s status on Thursday. Larkin, 30, is considered day-to-day.
“He’s working with the training staff to push through,” McLellan said. “I’m hoping Game 3.”
The Red Wings open the season with a four-game homestand, starting with games against the New York Rangers on Friday and Winnipeg Jets on Sunday.
Larkin lost his captaincy in the offseason after requesting a trade. The Michigan native had held the role since 2021 and has played his entire career with Detroit.
Larkin recorded a career-high 34 goals to go along with 33 assists in 74 games last season.
A gold medalist on the 2026 United States Olympic team in Italy, Larkin has totaled 643 points (276 goals, 367 assists) in 808 career games since he was selected by Detroit with the 15th overall pick of the 2014 NHL Draft.
The Red Wings have not been to the playoffs since the 2015-16 season, when Larkin played in the only five postseason games of his career.
