SAN FRANCISCO – Prior to Sunday’s Giants-A’s game, the Giants remembered the 1989 World Series, the only time the Giants and A’s met in the World Series. While the Giants were swept 4-0 in the series, it was remembered most for the massive 6.9 magnitude earthquake that struck the Bay Area before Game 3. The honoring of the series came at a time where both teams are currently chasing playoff spots in their respective divisions.
The introductions of the 1989 NL Champions began with Will Clark, affectionately known by fans as “The Thrill.” Clark, a career .303 hitter, finished second in MVP voting in 1989 and was crucial in helping the Giants reach the World Series. Clark batted .650 in the Giants’ 4-1 NLCS win over the Chicago Cubs and was responsible for a number of highlight plays, including a Game 1 grand slam and a 2-run single in Game 5 which sealed Giants’ 3-2 win to close out the series.
Following Clark was Kevin Mitchell, Candy Maldonado, Brett Butler, Dave Dravecky and current A’s third base coach Matt Williams.
