SAN FRANCISCO — Buster Posey announced after Friday’s game that he will have hip surgery Monday, ending his season and keeping him out of baseball for 6-8 months.
“I think Boch was gonna let everybody know tomorrow, but I don’t see the point.” Posey said. “We’re going to do it Monday.”
The procedure will be done in Vail, Colo. by Dr. Mark J. Phillippon, a renowned orthopedic hip surgeon. The surgery had previously been reported as likely to take place soon. Posey will fly to Colorado on Sunday and hopes to be ready for opening day.
“(Giants senior director of athletic training) Dave Groeschner is saying six to eight month range,” Posey said. “So I think if it goes smoothly, hopefully with no hiccups, I’ll be ready to go next opening day.”
Posey added that he was encouraged by the results of similar hip surgeries undergone by other major league catchers.
“I know Longo was telling me that Curt Casali, the Reds catcher, I believe had it done recently. I believe (Mets catcher Devin) Mesoraco had it,” Posey said. “I mean, everything that I’ve researched and heard is that the outcome’s generally pretty good. It can get you back to getting that range in your hip that’s pretty vital for hitting and squatting.”
