The 49ers have fired Assistant Head Coach / Tight Ends coach Jon Embree as first reported by Solomon Wilcots. Wilcots says that San Francisco parted with Embree after asking the 56-year-old to take a 60% pay cut. The report of Embree’s exit has been confirmed by multiple 49ers beat writers.
Embree’s hiring in 2017 coincided with the drafting of tight end George Kittle. During their time together, the fifth-round pick became arguably the best tight end in the NFL, making three Pro Bowls and two All-Pro teams during that span.
Embree reportedly would fine Kittle $10 every time he ran out of bounds as a rookie. Kittle led all tight ends in yards-after-catch in 2018 and 2019.
Embree first worked with Kyle Shanahan in 2010 during his only season as the tight ends coach in Washington, Shanahan’s first season as the team’s offensive coordinator. Embree has also coached tight ends Kansas City (2006-09), Cleveland (2013) and Tampa Bay (2014-16). He was also the head coach for the University of Colorado from 2011-2012
