SAN FRANCISCO – The 2022 NBA Champion Golden State Warriors have waived guard Mac McClung and forward Trevion Williams, it was announced today.
McClung recorded nine points, two rebounds and two assists in 12 minutes during the Warriors’ 104-95 victory over the Washington Wizards on Sunday Night in Tokyo, Japan. He originally signed with the club as a free agent on July 20. McClung was a Summer League standout, averaging 13.4 points, 4.8 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game on 45.6 percent shooting and 50 percent from downtown. He also flashed insane athleticism.
Williams appeared in two preseason games with the Warriors, averaging 2.5 points 3.5 rebounds and 1.0 assist in 5.7 minutes per game. Williams originally signed with Golden State on July 22.
The Warriors reportedly made two corresponding moves following the releases, bringing in guard Ty Jerome and forward Anthony Lamb to the training camp roster. Jerome actually played quite a bit for the Oklahoma City Thunder over the past two years, averaging 10.7 points per game off the bench during the 2020-21 season. Lamb appeared in 26 games for the Rockets and Spurs over the past two seasons.
It would appear the Warriors are ramping up the competition for the two-way spots, currently filled by guard Lester Quinones and wing Quinndary Weatherspoon. Some of this may depend on the health of Warriors rookie and emergency point guard Ryan Rollins. If he’s not ready to go by the beginning of the season, Jerome may be more valuable as another point guard option.
Witherspoon, who showed flashes in limited time last season, would seem to be in a far safer spot than Quinones.
