You rarely see a moment this bizarre. But if it’s going to happen, you hope it happens before the season starts.
The Giants are having their usual, final tune-up of spring training with a two-game slate against the Oakland A’s before the MLB season kicks open on Tuesday. And it seems like both teams needed it.
In the top of the 6th inning, the Giants had a very odd 3-batter stretch.
David Villar struck out. Joc Pederson walked. Then Luis Matos grounded into a fielder’s choice that secured one out at second base. Inning over. The A’s walk off the field.
For all of you who crushed the math section of the SATs, or took any level of math class growing up, you may notice that’s only two outs.
So, too, did Giants manager Gabe Kapler, who, after both teams trotted off the field to their respective dugouts, came out to talk to the umpires with the ole two-out horns.
After conferring, both teams realized the absurdity of what had transpired and headed back out onto the field.
It almost got interesting, with Matos stealing second, but J.D. Davis promptly flew out to end the inning… for a second time. The postgame comments on this one should be entertaining.
