Richard Sherman is happy Cam Newton has a job, but he’s not happy with how much the 2015 NFL MVP is getting paid.
Newton inked a one-year deal with the Patriots on Sunday evening worth a reported $7.5 million according to Ian Rapoport. That’s a great price for New England, but Sherman is disgusted any team was able to sign Newton that cheaply.
“How many former League MVPs have had to sign for the min?” Sherman wrote on Twitter. “(Asking for a friend.) just ridiculous. A transcendent talent and less talented QBs are getting 15/16m a year. Disgusting”

Even if you take Newton’s recent injury history into account — he missed nearly all of last season as he recovered from shoulder and foot injuries — the 31-year-old is still in his prime, and just two years removed from leading the NFL in completions (320) and completion percentage (67.5) while throwing for 3,395 yards, rushing for 488 and posting a QB rating of 94.2
Among quarterbacks earning more than Newton on a yearly basis are Ryan Tannehill ($29.5 mil), Jacoby Brissett ($27.9 mil), Derek Carr ($25 mil), Joe Burrow ($9 mil), Marcus Mariota ($8.8 mil), Kyler Murray ($8.7 mil), Baker Mayfield ($8.1 mil) and Nick Foles ($8 mil). Teddy Bridgewater, Newton’s replacement in Carolina, will earn $21 million this season. He’s started six games over the past four seasons.
Newton passed for 29,041 yards with 182 touchdowns and 108 interceptions, and rushed for 4,806 yards and 58 touchdowns during his time in Carolina. All are Panthers franchise records.
