As the 1-7 San Francisco 49ers’ struggles continue, everybody is pointing fingers regarding who’s to blame for the team’s woeful performance thus far. While some are hinting that the coaching staff may be at fault, the general consensus is that that the front office has done a poor job constructing a roster that can compete at the NFL level.
Former 49ers tight end Brent Jones is in that camp, telling the guys from The Audible on Friday morning that not even the best coaches in the NFL would have a chance to be successful with this level of talent.
“You’ve got to give these guys time because, (Bill) Belichick would be here right now and he’d be 1-7,” Jones said.
“It feels like the coaching staff in the last couple weeks has been under fire. I think that’s just a bunch of bologna. These guys came in with the weakest roster in the National Football League and there was nothing done to make it better.”
Instead of taking a flyer on a handful of big name free agents this offseason, general manger Trent Baalke elected to stand pat, and enter the season with a little over $44 million in cap space. Jones says that because of that decision, Kelly doesn’t even have enough talent to run his offense.
“We have got to give Chip Kelly and his staff a couple years to be able to implement his style of offense,” Jones said. “People can say whatever they want, the 49ers aren’t running his style of offense right now. The pace is much slower, my guess is the offense is dumbed down significantly…The reality is we just haven’t had the horses to pull it off and I think everybody’s looking for a finger to point and where are we gonna blame, but I think that is the wrong direction.”
