Radnich: Red Sox are paying Pablo $50M just to ‘get lost’

On July 14, the Red Sox announced they were designating Pablo for assignment, and officially released him from their roster five days later. On July 22nd, the Giants signed Pablo to a minor league contract.

Pablo played an important role for the Giants franchise during their run of three World Series championships in five years. Following the 2014 season, Pablo left the Giants to sign a 5 year, $95 million contract with the Boston Red Sox.

Pablo’s tenure with the Red Sox was largely disappointing.

“I think it makes the Giants look a little bit needy to bring this guy back,” says Radnich. “[The Red Sox] would rather give him $50 million just to get lost.”

Pablo’s rough stretch with the Red Sox felt like a bullet dodged for most Giants fans, but is a reality that they must face again as the oganization decided to give him a second chance. Pablo left the organization on a sour note claiming he’d only miss outfielder Hunter Pence and manager Bruce Bochy.

“[The Giants are] a proud franchise, three titles this decade; you don’t need to bring back somebody that kicked you in the groin, but more to the point, can’t play anymore,” Radnich asserted.

Bochy said the Giants will give Pablo around 40-50 at-bats in the minor leagues to make his case for a spot on the major league roster.
