Pereira on controversial calls hurting 49ers: ‘If I was Kyle, I’d be really frustrated’

Last Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts, the 49ers were rallying from down a touchdown in the fourth quarter. They attempted to tie the game on 2nd & Goal when Brian Hoyer threw a pass to the end zone intended for Marquise Goodwin.

Colts defensive back Vontae Davis appeared to hold Goodwin on the play, impeding his ability to attempt a catch, but there was no call.

While the 49ers still tied the game two plays later on a 4th & Goal touchdown pass from Hoyer to rookie tight end George Kittle, this non-call continued a trend of questionable penalty calls and non-calls hurting the 49ers this season. The phantom Trent Taylor offensive pass interference call against the Rams that has been discussed ad infinitum in the Bay certainly highlights said trend.

On Monday, FOX Sports rules expert and former NFL VP of officiating Mike Pereira came on with Gary & Larry, and shared his thoughts on whether the 49ers are getting hosed by the officials.

“I think if I was Kyle, I’d be really frustrated with some of the things that have happened to them when they fight with, I think, less-than-average players team-wide, they fight to be in contention, and then they get that offensive pass interference call that was extremely questionable, and then you get this play (Goodwin), you know, where…what would make Kyle mad is the league sent out a video to all the coaches, and the video was four plays involving illegal contact, and showing what is illegal contact, and stressing that illegal contact is a foul, and needs to, and will be called. And then you get that and it’s not called. And here’s the problem that I see in this particular area: I have never seen so few illegal contacts called. And Tim Ryan kind of said it: Do they ever call that anymore? It’s on a pace to be the record number of fewest illegal contact calls. So you send out a video and say it’s going to be called, you get that video on Friday, then you play on Sunday, and it doesn’t get called. Pretty frustrating, and you have to, if you’re marginal, you have to get those calls. You have to get those breaks.”

Gary, for his part, offered this up: “The 49ers were screwed.”
