The recent increase of protests taking place during the national anthem in the NFL stretches beyond football and even political circles. After Houston Texans owner Bob McNair openly voiced his opinion against players kneeling on Thursday, saying “we can’t have the inmates running the prison,” this issue reached the ears of an infuriated Draymond Green Friday morning, who responded via Instagram.
“I personally wouldn’t want to play for someone who viewed me as an inmate because I haven’t done anything in my life to make me an inmate” Green said. “In order to be an inmate, you’re either in the hospital or prison. Well, I’m not in a hospital and I’m for damn sure not in a prison.”
Although McNair has since apologized for his offensive comments, some believe the NFL owner to be innocent because of his use of a figure of speech. Nonetheless, Draymond expressed his displeasure with McNair’s insensitivity.
“Some people comment on my post, saying, ‘it’s just a figure of speech.’ I mean, agree or disagree, figure of speeches aren’t okay in 2017,” Green said. “So, if I say a figure of speech that’s not socially okay I’m going to get fined.
“I’m going to get ridiculed if I come out and give a figure of speech on anything, whether that’s race, whether that’s sexual orientation. Whatever it is, if I give a figure of speech in 2017, I’m going to get ridiculed by any group that’s formed to protect one’s group. I’m going to get fined by the NBA. I’m going to be looked at ridiculously by the community so why is that okay?”
