Giants’ bullpen target Brandon Morrow signs with Cubs [report]

The Giants won’t see Brandon Morrow in a Dodger uniform next season, but they won’t see him in one of their own either. Instead, according to a John Heyman report, the right-handed reliever will don Cubbie blue after agreeing to terms with Chicago on Sunday. The following morning, Ken Rosenthal reported the details of his contract, $21 million over two years.

In mid-November, John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle said that the Giants “checked in” on Morrow after proving himself as a reliable arm out of the bullpen with the Padres in 2016 and the Dodgers last season. Over those two years, he put up a 1.96 ERA with 58 strikeouts in 59.2 innings pitched.

Although the Cubs headed into the offseason hoping to bolster their bullpen, the Giants are in much more need of improvement in that department. After a solid year in 2016 with a 3.65 ERA, San Francisco’s bullpen ERA increased to 4.34 last season. Starting with Mark Melancon’s blown save on Opening Day that led to disastrous a season from the Giants’ highly paid closer, nearly the rest of the bullpen followed suit, aside from Cory Gearrin, who tossed a 1.99 ERA in 21 appearances.
