From 1977-2000, the San Francisco 49ers won five Super Bowl championships under the stewardship of owner Eddie DeBartolo. Seventeen years later, it appears DeBartolo reportedly has interest in getting back into the NFL, following the news that longtime Panthers owner Jerry Richardson is putting the team up for sale.
I’m told Eddie DeBartolo definitely is exploring the possibility of putting together a group to purchase the Panthers. He will have competition if he goes forward. https://t.co/7Lg3ex1cBK

DeBartolo, 71, was considered one of the best owners in sports during his time in San Francisco, but left the 49ers amid controversy when he was barred from ownership duties for a year after pleading guilty to “failing to report a felony” during a corruption case involving a former Louisiana governor. Instead of regaining control of the team in 2000, DeBartolo ceded control of the franchise to his sister, who eventually ceded it to her son, current 49ers owner Jed York.
DeBartolo has said he will not comment on his desire to purchase the Panthers until the season is over.
Statement from HOF owner Edward DeBartolo Jr. on his interest in buying the Carolina Panthers as reported on ESPN. "I am going to respect Jerry Richardson’s wish to not discuss the sale of the Carolina Panthers until after their season is over."
