SAN FRANCISCO — What started as a Saturday afternoon game didn’t wrap up until Saturday night, but it ended with the San Francisco Giants beating the Los Angeles Dodgers 7-5 after 14 innings.
Whether it was the incredible pitching performances by several young pitchers or the three-run walk-off home run by Andrew McCutchen, Bruce Bochy believes this game will be a hard one to forget.
“This is one of those games that will be talked about, I think,” Bochy said. “That’s how good of a game it was.
“We saw everything,” Bochy added. “Great pitching. Then they take the lead and what a great game Cutch had. Of course, a huge home run. It will be a game talked about.”
With the game tied 4-4 heading into extra innings, Pierce Johnson and Reyes Moronta rose to the occasion and held the Dodgers to one hit and three walks from the 10th to 13th inning.
Although the Dodgers managed to take the lead when Roberto Gomez took over in the 14th, he maneuvered around three hits to kept the Giants within reach.
“What a nice job those kids did,” Bochy said. “And Gomez. If you look at [Gomez’s] inning, how that unfolded. I mean, ground ball that just went up the middle. Another one that we just couldn’t quite get to. Another one that was hit there, but took a funny hop.
“You know what, he kept poise there. He kept it to one run and that’s huge.”
Trailing 5-4, Kelby Tomlinson and Joe Panik started the bottom of the 14th with back-to-back singles. Andrew McCutchen, who finished the game 6-for-7, put the Dodgers away with a three-run walk-off home run into the left field bleachers, sending AT&T Park into pandemonium.
“It had everything,” Bochy said. “We had a couple of tough moments there, but we showed how resilient we can be. It was just a great job coming back.”
