The Giants limped into Thursday’s series finale with the Philadelphia Phillies, trying to avoid a sweep while providing some offense amid a three-game stretch that has produced only five runs.

They didn’t have to wait long Thursday. Gregor Blanco homered to center field in the second pitch of the game.

The Giants entered Thursday ranked 23rd in the majors with only 35 home runs, but they showed early power Thursday. After Pablo Sandoval singled in the second inning, Alen Hanson crushed a fastball into the right field seats.

With Hanson’s homer, the Giants jumped out to a 3-0 advantage. The Phillies responded in the fourth inning, plating four runs to take the lead. They added another run in the fifth inning to extend their lead over the Giants to 5-3.
