SAN FRANCISCO — Steven Duggar had an impressive major league debut Sunday at AT&T Park, totaling two hits in six at-bats in the leadoff spot, including a double that sparked a five-run rally in the sixth inning.
Duggar credited his success with a simplified approach that gave him focus at the plate.
“I think for me, just coming in today—and you know, I didn’t sleep a whole lot last night—but I think the biggest thing for me was just offensively, just get on base,” Duggar said. “Find a way to simplify it just that way. If I can find a way on base, chances are I’m probably going to score just with the guys we have behind me. So if I can just get on base, create some havoc on the basepaths and provide an opportunity to put up some runs, that’s my goal is to try to get on base and make things happen.”
Duggar will likely platoon with Gorkys Hernandez in center field going forward. Hernandez, however, suffered a left calf injury in Sunday’s game and left in the sixth inning. He was replaced in left field by Hunter Pence. Bochy said Hernandez’s injury will likely only keep him out for one game, but if he misses Monday’s game, Duggar will likely get the start once again in center field.
