Dwight Clark will forever be immortalized with his iconic catch during the 1981 NFC Championship against the Dallas Cowboys. It is only fitting that Clark, who died last month at the age of 61, is memorialized that way.
Clark’s ashes are buried under a stone with flowers and a small tree in Eddie Debartolo’s yard at his Montana ranch. DeBartolo also has the Candlestick Park goalpost featured in ‘The Catch’ in the yard. Clark’s stone— which reads, “THE DYNASTY BEGAN WITH YOU!”— has been strategically placed to the very spot in which he caught the iconic touchdown in relation to the goalpost.
Clark’s catch propelled the 49ers to the 1981 Super Bowl, which they ultimately won over the Cincinnati Bengals. The two-time Pro Bowl receiver would go on to win his second championship three years later.
‘The Catch’ is widely regarded as the launching point of the 49ers’ dynasty that featured five Super Bowls in 14 seasons.
