DeMarcus Cousins made a formal complaint to the NBA after a Jan. 26 game in Boston this season, when he said a fan called him the n-word from the stands at the TD Garden. According to Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports, the fan was banned from attending Celtics games for the remainder of this season, and next season, but was not issued a lifetime ban by Boston.

On Friday, the Celtics released a statement explaining why they elected not to issue a lifetime ban to the fan in question, who was a minor, saying that they couldn’t verify that a racially insensitive remark was uttered.

Cousins was reportedly never informed by the league or the Celtics that the fan had been banned, according to Haynes.
