Peña, 29, has appeared in just 86 big league games throughout his career, 56 of which came last season with the Cardinals. Peña did not put up impressive numbers at the plate in his 142 plate appearances, posting a slash line of .203/.239/.271. Peña will likely replace catcher Stephen Vogt in Triple-A. Vogt was called up to the big league club on Wednesday. Vogt joined Eric Kratz and Buster Posey as the three catchers on the big-league roster.
Despite his struggles at the big-league level, Peña has been strong in Triple-A this season, batting .333 with a .429 OBP and one homer in 21 plate appearances.
