It’s fair to say, even before the prospects develop, the Giants won the Sam Dyson trade.
The Twins are reportedly probing whether they ever had a chance.
According to the (Minnesota) Star Tribune, the Twins have investigated whether the Giants knew Dyson had a sore shoulder before including him in a deadline deal for Jaylin Davis and minor league pitchers Prelander Berroa and Kei-Wei Teng. The two sides reportedly have discussed what the Giants knew of Dyson’s shoulder, and the Twins have not found evidence the Giants were concealing anything.
Dyson is expected to undergo surgery on his right (throwing) shoulder that will finish his season after just 12 appearances with Minnesota. He’s entering his final year of arbitration.
Neither the Giants nor Twins immediately responded for requests for comment.
Dyson was nearly perfect for the Giants leading up to July 31, throwing seven consecutive scoreless innings. He went to Minnesota, gave up six runs in two outings and hit the IL. He pitched in 10 more games before being shut down with more shoulder discomfort.
Speaking to Minnesota media in early August, Dyson said he could trace his shoulder problem to a mid-July series in Colorado: “My shoulder started bugging me, and I just kept throwing through it and throwing through it,” he told reporters. “It’s something pitchers always have. I think everyone is always working through something. It’s been there. Just been grinding on it.”
The Giants and Twins exchanged physicals before the trade was consummated.
Padres GM A.J. Preller was suspended 30 games without pay for failing to disclose proper medical information in a 2016 trade. Beyond that, there is little in the way of punishment precedent if evidence is found against the Giants.
