Matt Maiocco on what 49ers want for Beathard, what makes trading Pettis difficult ahead of deadline

The NFL trade deadline is just two hours away (Oct. 29, 1 PM PT). The 49ers already made their splash in acquiring Emmanuel Sanders last week. That doesn’t mean they’re done, however.

While unlikely to do anymore buying, the 49ers very well could be sellers in the next few hours. Reports have both backup quarterback C.J. Beathard and wide receiver Dante Pettis garnering some interest around the league.

49ers beat writer Matt Maiocco thinks it will be hard to offload both, albeit for different reasons. He explained why on KNBR Monday afternoon.

“As far as Pettis, frankly, who would want him?” Maiocco said. “He hasn’t shown anything.

“The 49ers moved up to take him. Which tells you that somebody else was going to take him before their turn in the draft came in the 2nd round. I just don’t know what they would get in return for him, I just don’t see that.”

The 49ers selected Pettis out of the University of Washington, trading two later round picks to select him 44th overall. Pettis has been largely anonymous so far in his second season, after a few flashes in 2018. Even with injuries to Jalen Hurd and Trent Taylor, Pettis has caught just 10 passes in seven games this year.

Beathard is a different story.

“As far as C.J. Beathard, I was told yesterday that the 49ers haven’t been calling teams about Beathard, but some teams have called and asked the 49ers about him. The 49ers are holding pretty steady on what they want in return.

“My guess would be a 4th rounder. They’ve been offered a 6th rounder, I know that, and they’re not inclined to take that. They could’ve traded either a Beathard or (Nick) Mullens before the start of the regular season, but Kyle really likes these guys. He thinks that each of those guys can be a starter.”

Normally any return for a third-string quarterback would be considered a steal, but Shanahan is notoriously fond of both Beathard and Mullens, and believes both are capable of being quality NFL starters.

“I don’t know that C.J. Beathard will be dealt. At this point I kind’ve doubt it. I would doubt there are any deals made Tuesday, but I certainly would think it’s a possibility. They don’t have a 2nd round pick, they don’t have a 3rd round pick or a 4th round pick. If they can get something in the draft that kind of replenishes that a little bit for 2020, I think they would look hard into it.”
