You weren’t supposed to know the names Justin Skule and Daniel Brunskill. For a variety of reasons that was true, but mainly because Mike McGlinchey hadn’t missed a game since high school and Joe Staley had missed just four in the past eight seasons (out of a possible 128). He did, however, miss those four in the prior three years, so a solid backup for the then 34-year-old was a necessity.

That necessity was Shon Coleman, who the 49ers acquired from the Cleveland Browns for a 2019 seventh-round pick. Coleman had a standout preseason, in which he didn’t look far off the pace from either McGlinchey or Staley, until, in a freak situation, he fractured his fibula on the fourth play from scrimmage in the 49ers’ preseason opener against the Dallas Cowboys on August 10.

The 49ers announced on Monday they had extended Coleman for another year. The following comes from the 49ers:

The San Francisco 49ers today announced they have signed T Shon Coleman to a one-year extension.

Coleman (6-5, 310) was originally acquired by the 49ers in a trade with the Cleveland Browns on August 31, 2018 and was inactive for each of the team’s 16 games that season. In 2019, he was placed on the Injured Reserve List on August 12, where he spent the entire season. Throughout his four NFL seasons (2016-19), he has appeared in 23 games (16 starts).

A 28-year-old native of Olive Branch, MS, Coleman appeared in 32 games (25 starts) in five years (2011-15) at Auburn University. As a senior in 2015, he earned Second-Team All-SEC honors after starting 12 games at left tackle.
