The 2020 NFL Draft is in just over 24 hours, so the final mock drafts are about to start rolling in at a breakneck pace.
One that is extremely relevant to 49ers fans dropped last night, when longtime beat writer Matt Maiocco released his seven-round mock that includes three trades netting San Francisco four picks in the first four rounds. John Lynch is on the record as saying that he’s willing to move both the 49ers’ No. 13 and No. 31 overall picks to bridge the gap of not having selections in the second, third or fourth rounds.
Maiocco sees Lynch’s wheeling and dealing looking something like this:
- 49ers trade No. 13 (first round), No. 156 (fifth round) and No. 210 (sixth round) to the Miami Dolphins for No. 18 (first round) and No. 70 (third round)
- 49ers trade No. 31 (first round) to the Los Angeles Chargers for No. 37 (second round) and No. 112 (fourth round)
- 49ers trade No. 112 (fourth round) and No. 217 (seventh round) to the Detroit Lions for No. 108 (fourth round)
That leaves the 49ers with one first-round pick, which Maiocco sees them using on Clemson cornerback A.J. Terrell, arguably the team’s biggest need. Every San Francisco CB — Richard Sherman, Ahkello Witherspoon, Emmanuel Moseley and Jason Verrett — is scheduled to become a free agent next season.
The 49ers will get their receiver in round two, selecting WR Brandon Aiyuk out of Arizona State. The thinking here is that San Francisco still gets excellent value — although misses out on the “big three” — in one of the deepest receiver classes in recent memory.
In the third round comes some Joe Staley insurance in OT Matthew Peart out of UConn. Then Lynch addresses the issues of d-line and tight end depth, selecting DT McTelvin Agim out of Arkansas and TE Thaddeus Moss — Randy’s son– out LSU in the fourth and fifth rounds respectively.
Lastly, the 49ers take a flier on an interior lineman in round seven, selecting OG/C Darryl Williams from Mississippi State.
No. 18 (first round): CB A.J. Terrell, Clemson
No. 37 (second round): WR Brandon Aiyuk, Arizona State
