49ers broadcaster Greg Papa and longtime beat writer and 49ers insider Matt Maiocco conducted a mock draft consisting of former 49ers players and coaches, in order to see who could construct the better “Ultimate Team.”
The rules were as follows: Only players who spent five or more seasons with the 49ers – or are current members of the organization — were eligible to be selected. Each team was allowed one wild-card selection, a player who was on the team for any period of time.
Maiocco had the first selection in the snake draft format and went with Bill Walsh, while Papa responded with the wicked one-two punch of Joe Montana and Jerry Rice. Papa selected Deion Sanders, who won NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 1994, his only season with San Francisco — as his wild-card selection. Maiocco went with recently departed defensive tackle defensive tackle DeForest Buckner.
