Their manager already had spoken out after the death of George Floyd, who pleaded with Minneapolis police that “I can’t breathe” as a knee remained on his neck. The Giants followed suit, in less forceful terms.

“We unequivocally denounce acts of racial injustice against members of the black community that continue to plague our nation,” the club said in a statement Sunday night. “We pledge to honor the memories of those who have senselessly lost their lives by working together to end discrimination and violence in our communities.”

This weekend has been filled with team and league statements that typically denounce hatred and racism without delving deeper into the matter, not wanting to offend either police or rioters. Since officer Derek Chauvin’s knee helped end Floyd’s life, which was captured on video, there have been protests and riots around the nation as fury over police brutality of minorities has ushered in a reckoning in the United States.

There will be fans angry with the Giants for joining the trend that club/league statements do not mention “police” once. There also will be fans angry that they are not denouncing the riots that have ensued since Floyd’s death. So it sadly goes.
