The San Francisco Giants’ player pool grows ever closer to filling, as the team announced on Wednesday that it would add another three players to the up-to 60-player pool for training camp. Per the team, Sam Wolff, a 29-year-old right-handed pitcher with a career 3.47 ERA in the minors, Caleb Baragar, a 26-year-old left-handed pitcher with a 3.82 career era in the minors, and Alexander Canario, an outfielder and the organization’s sixth-ranked prospect per MLB.com, have all been added to the team’s player pool.
This should bring the pool up to 59 players, after the team added four players on July 4 to bring the number to 56. That leaves one more spot, discernibly for Hunter Bishop, should he recover from the coronavirus, or at least in time for camp.
In Wolff’s 2019 campaign with the AZL Giants (Rookie league), Richmond Flying Squirrels (AA) and Sacramento River Cats (AAA), he had a combined 2.87 ERA in over 47.0 innings pitched, with a near career-best 1.15 WHIP.
Baragar, a starter, had a fantastic season with the Flying Squirrels last year, posting a 3.45 ERA in 120.0 innings, but allowing just a .192 batting average and an impressive 1.05 WHIP. His season was defined by a stellar, five-inning, no-run start in the the Triple-A National Championship, where the River Cats beat the Columbus Clippers 4-0 to win the title last season. He allowed just two hits and one walk, striking out five.
Canario, just 20 years of age, had seven at-bats in spring training 1.0, striking out five times, walking once, and hitting a single. But in lower-level ball last season, he was astoundingly good at the age of 19. He hit .395 with seven home runs and 14 RBI in 43 Rookie League at-bats, before moving to play with the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes, he batted .301 with nine home runs and 40 RBI. He did strike out 71 times, but posted a .365 on-base percentage and .539 slugging percentage.
