No more guessing as to why Buster Posey hasn’t been in Giants camp.

Though Giants Manager Gabe Kapler has said only that a “personal issue” has kept Posey away from the team for three of the past four days, President of Baseball Operations Farhan Zaidi was more specific when he joined Tolbert, Krueger & Brooks on Thursday.

Zaidi implied that Posey is indeed deciding whether to participate in the upcoming 60-game season due to concerns about how the virus could affect his family, specifically his young children.

“I think he’s continuing to evaluate things on a day-to-day basis and frankly I think there’s a few guys in that boat,” Zaidi said. “Certainly guys with young families and certainly Buster’s in that boat. It’s something else to think about. I don’t want to get into other personal things that he may be thinking…but we’ll respect the decisions any of our players make.”

Should Posey decide to sit out, he would be the first Giants player to do so, but would join a growing number of veteran MLB players who have chosen to do the same. Last weekend veteran Dodgers pitcher David Price announced he would not be participating.

If there are indeed other players on the Giants straddling the fence as Zaidi says, it’s not unreasonable to assume that Posey’s decision could be a tipping point regarding their participation as well.
