Yasiel Puig is a free agent again, and hopefully a healthy one.
The outfielder who agreed to a deal with the Braves failed his physical because he tested positive for the coronavirus, Puig announced Friday. He will have to quarantine before he can hope to sign with the Braves or another team, although Atlanta likely will look for additional help, trying to fill the void Nick Markakis left when he opted out. He will need two negative tests to show the virus is gone.
Puis said he is asymptomatic and feels “absolutely fine.” The former Dodgers outfielder, who is the subject of constant Giants rumors, also sent a message to his fans and the world about staying safe in this pandemic era.
“I would have never believed looking in the mirror that I had COVID-19,” Puig wrote on Instagram. “I urge everyone to take this pandemic seriously, this can happen to anyone, even the healthiest athlete. Wear a mask, social distance, and follow your local protocols. Please take care of yourselves. I will see you all very soon when I return to play ball.”
