LOS ANGELES — Opening Day is here, and so is the Giants’ 30-man roster.
The Giants formally announced the players who have braved a pandemic and made the team for Game One. Tyler Heineman beat out Chadwick Tromp and will be the catcher against the Dodgers’ Clayton Kershaw, with Rob Brantly behind him. As expected, Joey Bart, despite an excellent camp, will start the season in Sacramento.
Among the surprise inclusions is Joe McCarthy, a lefty-hitting outfielder who has seen time at first base in camp since Brandon Belt went down. The 26-year-old has yet to debut in the majors and is well-regarded for his plate discipline. Belt, meanwhile and Evan Longoria will begin the season on the 10-day IL.
Also making the team as non-roster invites were lefty Caleb Baragar, who impressed in camp, righty Rico Garcia, who appeared in a pair of big-league games with Colorado last year, Darin Ruf and Pablo Sandoval.
To clear space on the 40-man roster for those additions, outfielder Jose Siri and infielder Kean Wong were designated for assignment. Steven Duggar and Andrew Suarez were named to the taxi squad, with a third slot available, perhaps for Tromp.
Notably absent from the team is Yolmer Sanchez, whose back locked up Tuesday. Billy Hamilton, who was held up by a medical issue and reported to camp late, also is not on the Opening Day squad.
Farhan Zaidi will speak publicly shortly in explaining the team’s thinking. Here is the full roster:
