As was rumored on Tuesday, the Giants have indeed made a trade with the New York Yankees. Interestingly, it does not involve the player at the heart of those rumors.
The Giants traded reserve catcher Rob Brantly to the Yankees on Wednesday for cash the team confirmed. They have held on to pitcher Kevin Gausman for the time being, after the Yankees called about him according to a report by SNY.
Brantly was on the Giants’ Opening Day roster, but appeared in just one game before being sent to the alternate site in Sacramento. Even with Buster Posey sitting out the season, Brantly was sitting fourth in the catching pecking order behind Joey Bart, Chadwick Tromp and Tyler Heineman.
Acquired as a free agent this offseason, Brantly hasn’t played consistently since he appeared in 67 games for the Marlins in 2013. In six big league seasons, Brantly has a career slash line of .228/.292./.330.
