With 24 games remaining, the Giants find themselves just a game out of the final Wild Card spot in the National League. Nobody expected to be saying that about this Giants team in 2020, then again nobody expected the 2020 MLB season to be a 60-game sprint with 16 playoff teams either.
Yet here we are, and if you are skeptical about the Giants’ ability to slot into that final Wild Card spot, they certainly aren’t, exemplified by a silent trade deadline where San Francisco held onto their assets.
We know what the Giants think about their own club, but what about the experts? ESPN’s Tim Kurkjian has been covering baseball for longer than just about anyone, and was asked by Papa & Lund on Tuesday morning how he pegs San Francisco’s postseason chances.
“Well I did not see them winning seven games in a row so they surprised me for a second year in a row and I don’t think they’re good enough to go to the playoffs,” Kurkjian said on KNBR. “Having said that I’m not really sold on the Rockies or the Brewers or the Cardinals or the Reds. I’m pretty sold that the Cubs are going to make it. That National League East that I thought was going to be a bear, I’m sold on the Braves making it but I’m not sure after that. So yes, there’s a spot for the Giants to make the playoffs I just don’t see it happening.
“I don’t think they’re going to score enough runs even though they’re scoring way more runs at home than they have in the past cause of changes to the ballpark. I don’t think they have enough pitching at the top.
“I think they’ve done pretty well and got some people at least interested in the future there, but I don’t think they’re a playoff team this year.”
The Giants have just under a month to prove Kurkjian wrong, starting with their game in Colorado vs. the Rockies on Tuesday night. Listen to the full interview below.
