It’s funny to talk about which team is going to land a player that no one’s sure is going anywhere.
Such is the modern NBA, however, where the potential of what the league might look like is more intriguing than how it’s currently constructed. That’s especially true when the party in question is a soon-to-be two-time-MVP, whose juggernaut team suddenly finds themselves down 2-0 in a playoff series they were supposed to win easily.
Ginnis Antetokounmpo has never given any real indication that he would leave Milwaukee, but their current situation has the league buzzing that the Greek Freak may be coming to the realization that his dreams of a championship might be had elsewhere.
Golden State, much to the chagrin of everyone who doesn’t live in the Bay Area, has of course been pegged as an intriguing landing spot, fresh off three years of the Kevin Durant experiment which netted two titles and nearly a third.
Yet, the Warriors are not the frontrunner for Giannis who is set to become a free agent next offseason, at least according to the buzz in the Orlando Bubble.
“Many in league circles believe (the) Miami (Heat) and Toronto (Raptors) are the frontrunners in the Antetokounmpo sweepstakes, with one observer telling Yahoo Sports ‘it’s an open secret’ within the Orlando bubble,” NBA reporter Vince Goodwill wrote on Wednesday night, after another disappointing Bucks loss to the Heat.
Both Miami and Toronto as landing spots make sense. Both are well constructed, well respected, deep teams that would immediately become title favorites with Antetokounmpo in the fold.
Would Giannis’ interest in Miami be subject to if he wins this series or not? If he does indeed fall to the Heat, would he request a trade this offseason, or leave in free agency next offseason? Are we sure he even wants to go?
Who knows, but as long as the Bucks continue to struggle in the playoffs, they’ll keep getting asked.
