It sounds as if Alex Dickerson won’t miss much time, but this would be a painful way to cool off his bat.
The Giants left fielder exited Monday’s 4-2 win over the Diamondbacks at Oracle Park with a right knee contusion after fouling a ball off that knee. X-rays were negative, which is of course a positive, and Gabe Kapler said it was possible Dickerson could play Tuesday, though they will need to check with him.
In the fourth inning, Dickerson dropped to the dirt immediately after slugging the ball right into his knee. He hobbled for a few minutes and talked with trainer Dave Groeschner before the two walked off the field, Darin Ruf replacing him.
Dickerson, who is 13-for-29 (.448) in his past eight games with four homers and four doubles, would be a significant loss if he misses extended time. The Giants are set to face Seattle righty Ljay Newsome on Tuesday.
“I certainly had my concerns about Alex,” said Kapler, who added he was relieved upon hearing about the X-rays. “He’s such an important piece of our lineup against right-handed pitching, but just generally a very important piece of our roster.
“…It seems like it won’t be long.”
The Giants are thin on lefty-hitting outfielders, Steven Duggar repeatedly shuttling between Sacramento and San Francisco.

Kapler announced Logan Webb would start against Newsome, staying on schedule. He did not have a determination about Wednesday’s starter, which would be Tyler Anderson if they keep it status quo. Drew Smyly should be able to return Wednesday or Thursday, with Trevor Cahill theoretically in line for the latter day.
Kapler on the Giants hitting .500:
“It’s gratifying. It certainly speaks to the fight that this club has. We can go back a couple of weeks and find some pretty heartbreaking losses, and these guys are resilient. They bounce back from those losses, they bounce back from in-game deficits. I think the character of this team is continuing to shine through. Long way to go, a lot of work left to do, but certainly gratifying to get back to that .500 mark. It’s a good step.”
