Ejections are rarely well-timed, but it’s hard to find a worse spot on the Giants calendar than this one.
Tyler Anderson was tossed after walking Kyle Lewis, the Mariners’ leadoff man, in the bottom of the third inning on Thursday, and thus began what will become a taxing day for the Giants’ bullpen.
Anderson was upset that ball four to Lewis was not strike three, a pitch that was in the middle of the plate and did appear to be high enough. He jawed at home-plate ump Edwin Moscoso, who had a short temper and gave the hook. Anderson stood on the mound dumbfounded before Gabe Kapler approached and took the ball, Anderson adding some comments Moscoso’s way as he walked off the field.
Perhaps in another season, with fans in the stands, his words would not have been so clear to Moscoso. Whatever the case, it would hurt a Giants team that is on Day and Game Two of a 13-games-in-12-days stretch to finish their season, which means seven innings from a bullpen that will need to find pockets to rest.
Wandy Peralta was the first to replace Anderson in a game the Giants were losing 4-1, but the bullpen gate will get its work.
