Max Scherzer looks to be heading out West, just not where you hoped.

The three-time Cy Young Award winner is close to joining the San Diego Padres according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. The deal is not done yet. Scherzer still has to waive his no-trade clause, and the teams have to agree on who the Padres are sending over in return.

The Giants were reportedly in on Scherzer, 37, who strongly preferred to be traded from the Nationals to the West Coast. San Francisco now has a day and a half to decide if they want to make a play for a star of their own. In addition to Scherzer, the Giants have been linked to Kris Bryant, Trevor Story and Jon Grey.

Scherzer is still one of the best pitchers in baseball, posting a 2.83 ERA and a 0.88 WHIP in 18 starts this season.
