It’s been over 24 hours since the Giants made an enormous splash by trading for Red Sox star infielder Rafael Devers. In doing so they transformed their underachieving lineup to complement what has been one of the league’s most elite pitching staffs.
Subsequently, it was a very busy Monday on The Sports Leader covering the local and league wide reaction. It all started with Buster Posey joining Murph & Markus for an exclusive interview to break down the deal and how the lineup will look going forward. Much like his “it’s time to go” like from two weeks ago, he let loose a “last man standing” moniker for fans to eat up.
Don’t doubt Posey’s competitive drive. Even after his playing days, moves like this one still give him the rush that strapping on the catcher’s gear once did. It was far from a relaxing Father’s day for Posey and general manager Zack Minasian, who spent much of the morning in the trenches on the phones with the Red Sox brass.
Although it’s an objectively good deal for the Giants, Devers was the center of some defensive controversy this year in Boston. He publicly objected to the Red Sox patchwork plan to play him at the corners and DH, seeking a more consistent role. Alex Pavlovic joined Papa and Silver this afternoon and explained why the Giants don’t think that will be an issue here.
Is it as simple as a matter of respect for the man in charge? Tim Kurkjian joined the Dirty Work boys this afternoon and expressed as much.
Below is a whole lot more from Posey’s interview with Murph & Markus.
